Piano Sonata in C-Minor by Ian – His First Copyrighted Work

My son, Ian, has been playing the piano since he was six years old. One thing he does consistently every day is practice pieces from his piano books. He also loves watching pianists on YouTube and listening to piano pieces on Spotify. Ian seems to have inherited his musical talent from my dad, his grandfather, who was an accomplished musician. My dad learned to build and play his own guitar at the remarkable age of three.

Ian has been fortunate to be mentored by a friend and fellow thespian, Teacher Cel, who runs a music studio near our home. Under her guidance over the past few years, Ian has progressed through several piano books and has even composed three original pieces.

On November 24, Ian made us proud once again by performing his third original composition, along with three classical pieces, at his recital. He worked tirelessly, practicing for at least 30 minutes every day on the keyboard. His dedication truly paid off, as he delivered an outstanding performance, ending with his original composition as the grand finale (video below).

To protect Ian’s hard work and creativity, we applied for copyright for his third composition through the Philippine Intellectual Property Office. The process involved submitting Ian’s birth certificate, an application form, and a copy of my government ID. After paying the required fee, we received a virtual copy of the certificate within two weeks. This milestone not only marks his growth as a young musician but also his official entry into the world of professional artistry. His piece is officially named as “Piano Sonata in C-Minor”. This is his photo when we got his certificate and informed him that he could potentially earn some money if someone decides to use his work. His smile was so adorable, I needed to snap a photo. 🙂
