Did you say rocks are boring? Not to a petrologist.

Very few people know that I get to work on rocks in a microscopic level – that is, I analyze rocks in thin sections (as thin as a strand of hair!).  Volcanic rocks (the one extruded by volcanoes or frozen lavas), while they look dull in hand specimen, are actually pretty under a microscope. These rocks are made of crystals welded together by glass and fine crystals. Cool, huh?
