A Space of My Own: Where Art, Science, and Stillness Meet

I’ve recently moved into a new place—and it’s a dream come true. While it’s officially our family’s secondary home near my workplace, I’ve begun to think of it as something more: my sanctuary.

My sanctuary, with my babies
My babies visited me for the first time and spent a few days to keep me company while I spruced up our new place.

What started out as a practical solution has slowly evolved into a deeply personal space, one where I can be fully present and creative. It’s my art and music space, my retreat, and the quiet backdrop to my dreams. And now that it’s real, I still find myself pausing from time to time—grateful, surprised, and just quietly content.

This space isn’t just about walls and furniture. It’s about intention. It’s about building a life I love, one thoughtful detail at a time.

This space is for music, art, and science.

I’ve been carefully customizing every corner with soft shades of white, beige, and rose pink—colors that quietly replaced my favorite color from childhood which is blue. My ukulele rests on a foldable stool, always within reach for those spontaneous bursts of melody or when I need to practice pieces that have been assigned as homework by my ukulele teacher (more on this later). My paintbrushes, palettes, and art books are nestled in their own cozy nook, ready for moments when inspiration strikes—whether in the early morning light before I go to work or the hush of evening when things slow down.

There’s a warm, inviting sofa bathed in soft lamplight, where I curl up with my thoughts, sketchbooks, or favorite novels—or simply stare at the ceiling and let myself dream. Nearby is a table with comfortable chairs where I sip my morning coffee, jot down plans in my diary, outline new articles, or type away on my laptop. I’ve even added my favorite diffuser and a small collection of essential oils by the sofa. Their gentle scents help me unwind and, every now and then, carry me back to fond childhood memories.

This isn’t just a place to sleep or dine in. It’s a haven where I can write, paint, play music, and do scientific research—a place where science meets art, and quiet creativity thrives. It’s a studio, a study, and a sanctuary. And most of all, it’s mine.

I promised my kids I’ll treat them to Korean food and I did that promise. Can’t wait for their dad to join us next time! ❤

This weekend, my kids joined me here. I showed them how I’ve spruced up the space—not just so they could see it, but so they could feel it. I wanted them to know that this is a safe, quiet corner of our world, too. While I may use it most of the time, it’s also theirs—a little vacation home, a warm nest apart from our primary home. A place that belongs to us. A place they can return to whenever they need stillness, comfort, or simply a bit of mom’s magic. I asked ChatGPT to create a poem for this sanctuary and this is the output:

“Where soft hues meet sound and silence—
this is my corner of the world,
where colors bloom on canvas,
songs rise from strings,
and ideas take root quietly on paper.
A place to dream, create, and just be.”
