From Commutes to Code: My First Month as a Tech Data Admin (Happy Labor Day!)

Hi all,
If you’ve noticed I haven’t been writing much lately, it’s because my schedule has been hectic! Today marks my first month at my new job, and commuting from my city to Alabang has been quite the challenge. The long distance means I have to leave home early to beat the traffic—and more often than not, I end up taking a taxi or Grab instead of the train, which gets too crowded in the mornings. I’m still trying to figure out the most efficient and affordable way to get to work, and I’m hoping to find a better route soon.

That said, I’m genuinely happy with my new role. I joined an oil and gas company as a Technical Data Management admin, and I’ve been learning so much. It’s my first time working in this industry, and the datasets I now handle are complex and mostly unfamiliar to me. During my first week, I came across a whirlwind of abbreviations and technical jargon—I had to Google quite a few terms just to keep up!

What’s been really encouraging is how supportive everyone has been. My officemates are patient and approachable, always willing to help when I have questions. Even the senior experts in the industry have been kind and open whenever I consult with them. There’s definitely a lot to absorb, but I appreciate that I’m in a space where continuous learning is welcomed.

One of the things I love most about this role is how challenging—and rewarding—it can be. On my second week, I was tasked with creating an inventory of our data, which at first felt overwhelming due to the sheer volume and complexity of the files. I spent a lot of time going through folders manually, until one day, I realized I could write a script to automate part of the process. After a bit of trial and error, I got it to work! It was such a satisfying moment—I even gave myself a little pat on the back.

What made it even more meaningful was that the script I wrote used Python—skills I had been learning on my own during a period when I was out of work. I’m definitely not a Python expert, but being able to apply those lessons in a real-world setting was a huge confidence boost. It reminded me that the time I invested in upskilling wasn’t wasted at all. Small wins like this keep me motivated to keep learning and improving.

So yes, I’m adjusting. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. I’m learning, growing, and slowly settling into a rhythm that feels good. And, since it is Labor Day, I just want to say how grateful I am to be back in the workforce, doing meaningful work, surrounded by kind and capable people.

Also, not gonna lie—one of the perks I’m really enjoying? Finally being able to spend on a few new bags and clothes again. Haha. 😊

Looking forward to what the next few months will bring!

xoxo,

Grass

  1. Very well done! Python is such a powerful weapon in one’s arsenal of skills.

It is also important that your workplace gives you that chance to grow and develop. That way, you become an asset to them in the end!
