A Tale of Two Dermatologists: Why a Second Opinion Matters

Recently, I found myself in need of a dermatologist’s advice for my persistent, itchy skin rashes. I ended up visiting two different doctors — and the contrast between their approaches couldn’t have been more striking.

The first dermatologist took a quick glance at my skin. She didn’t ask much about my medical history, lifestyle, or recent changes in my health. Within minutes, she handed me a list of expensive creams and soaps that I could conveniently purchase from her own clinic. There was no suggestion for a follow-up appointment, no discussion about the possible cause of my skin problem, and no real effort to educate me about what I was experiencing. I left the clinic feeling rushed, unheard, and a little suspicious that my treatment plan was more about sales than healing.

The second dermatologist, however, was a completely different story. She took time — real, intentional time — to examine my skin closely. She asked questions about whether I had recently been sick, if I was going through stress, and if I had a history of allergies. She even painted an analogy: some people’s skin, she said, is like a wall with a few missing bricks. These weak spots become vulnerable to conditions like dermatitis.

From there, she explained the science behind skin health — how infections can trigger dermatitis and the role of cholesterol as a natural skin barrier. She offered affordable alternatives for creams and soaps, and most importantly, scheduled a follow-up visit in two weeks to check on my progress. I walked out of her clinic not only with a treatment plan but with a deeper understanding of my own skin and how to care for it.

This experience reminded me of an important truth: it’s never wrong to seek a second opinion. If your first consultation leaves you feeling dismissed or uncertain, you owe it to yourself to find a doctor who truly listens and takes the time to explain. Your health is a partnership, and you deserve a healthcare provider who’s willing to exchange energy with you — to listen, to educate, and to walk alongside you in your healing journey.

  1. Our physical well-being is heavily influenced by our mental state (particularly things like stress). The simple act of active listening puts your second doctor at a great advantage in helping you heal, and it being sustainable long term.

My own sleep has dramatically improved since I retired and no longer have the background hum in my mind of projects and issues that need addressing in the workplace. Finding a calm inner self is a massive step towards more general healthy living, in my view.

    1. Thank you for your insights. I agree, stress seems to be a big factor in my overall well-being. The second doctor was so helpful – the listening part and thorough explanation put my mind at ease. Her prescribed medicines worked too!
Good to know you’re sleeping well now. At work, it isn’t that stressful, I thoroughly enjoy the things I do at work and the team mates are great.
