Geology, My Creations, My Life in Watercolor

Paint-along sessions via Zoom for April 2024 – an invitation to Geologists and Geology students

Hey, can you feel the excitement in the air? It’s that time of the year again, almost here! Last year, I decided to spread some joy by offering free basic watercolor classes to homeschooling kids in my birth month. My main goals behind organizing the class were simple: I wanted my kids and me to connect with other homeschooling families and to express our gratitude for their support during the initial stages of our homeschooling journey.

Next month, I’m gearing up to host another round of paint-along sessions, but this time, I’m shifting gears to target fellow geologists and geology students. As geologists, one of our key activities in the field is observing rocky landscapes and meticulously documenting our findings in field notebooks. Back in my college days at UP, our professors made sure we were well-versed in this practice. We’d spend hours sketching rocks and detailing crucial features like bedding planes, grain size distribution, fault planes, annotated with angles, thickness, arrows, and directions. I wasn’t the best when it came to sketching when I compared my drawings with those of my classmates, but I was proud of my work for the simple reason that I knew I wasn’t born with the talent.

For next month, all sessions will be conducted via Zoom every Sunday. In these sessions, I will cover the basics of watercolors and how to render a geologist’s favorite subject, rocks, using this amazing medium. These sessions are not technically art classes, but each Zoom session will be designed as an informal one where participants learn about how art can be integrated into their work or studies as geologists. Anyone with their own materials will have the chance to sketch and paint along with me.

For day 1, which is April 7, at 2 PM, the participants will sketch and paint these waterfalls and bedded rock in Palawan, a reference photo taken by my friend and fellow geologist, Dainty, the Palawan Geologist. She will also be there during the session to explain a bit about the geology of this area. If you’re a geology student or a professional, sign up using Google form or you may scan the QR code in the poster below to bring you to the form. The list of materials and other details are also included in the form. Do let me know in the comments section or via the Google form if you have questions about the materials.

See you there!

xoxo,
